OVAC Paddlesport Courses - Introduction to Canoeing or Kayaking (1 Star)
Day 1 - Lake based
Day 2 - River Severn to practice newly learnt skills
This course can be taken as a one or two day course and is designed to give you the foundation skills in canoeing or kayaking and the varied types of paddle sport. Whether you see yourself exploring placid waterways and lakes or descending white water rapids, it all starts here. Starting on our lake teaching the basic paddle skills, you then move onto local rivers, putting your newly learned skills into practice. For the younger ones there is the opportunity to start the exciting British Canoe Union 'Paddle Power' programme of awards, while the adults can complete their British Canoe Union 1 star award if desired.

Day 1 - Lake based
Day 2 - River journey to practice newly learnt skills
This is a two day improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. For those with the relevant experience you may have the opportunity to take your British Canoe Union 2 star award. The 2 star award is also a pre-requisite for the BCU/UKCC level 1 coaching award.

BCU 3 Star Award - Training & Assessment
Successful performance at this level indicates that the paddler can consider themselves an intermediate paddler, as they can now paddle on moving waters. They can do this in a competent manner as part of a led group and have the knowledge and ability to help the smooth running of a trip while being led down a section of a grade 2 river.

White Water Kayak Training, practice and assessment week
This 5 day course is an all inclusive residential course and alternative to the seperate training and assessment days enabling you to gain your BCU 3 Star award in white water kayaking in 5 consecutive days. The student will partake in training work on day 1 and 2, practice of newly learnt skills during days 3 and 4, and then perform their assessment on day 5 of the course.

BCU/UKCC Level 1 Coach Award
This is the first step on the paddlesport coaching pathway. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of good coaching practice and helps you to understand and coach technical and tactical aspects of your sport. As a level 1 coach you can deliver sessions in kayaks and canoes This 4 day course is based at the centre, using our wide range of paddle craft on our own lake. For those that have not completed their FSRT we run the level 1 course over 5 days with day 1 covering this module.

BCU/UKCC Level 2 Coach Training
This is the second step on the paddlesport coaching pathway. It focuses on progressive coaching, helping you to develop your canoeing / kayaking students within their first 3 years of paddling, through a series of sessions. This runs as a 4 day training course with a separate assessment. As a Level 2 Coach you can (and are encouraged to) deliver sessions in any type of kayak/canoe. One aim of the Level 2 Award is to provide you with the confidence and understanding to transfer skills between various boat types. This will allow you to focus your coaching around the needs of your students.

BCU Foundation Safety & Rescue Training
Fundamentally this course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of craft. The objective is to teach simple and safe skills that can be applied appropriately. The course aims to provide the canoeing or kayaking student with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely in a sheltered water environment and to be able to deal with common emergencies. These skills will then form the basis of all safety and rescue training throughout the BCU Scheme and are a pre-requisite for anyone entering the coaching scheme.

White Water Rescue Technician (WRT)
The White Water Rescue Technician course is recognised as an alternative to the BCU White Water Safety & Rescue Course (required for the BCU 4 star) and the Advanced WWSR course (required for the 5 star award).
This course is aimed specifically at outdoor professionals such as kayakers and river guides and instructors operating in a water environment including coasteering and canyoneering guides and gauge walkers. The course expects participants to have previous river knowledge and experience, allowing more time to concentrate on developing effecting rescue skills in a white water environment. This course is set to become the benchmark rescue course for river professionals the worldwide.
